Take this morning, for instance. Start the day with:

What I Like About You - The Romantics

A decent start to the day; it got me out of the house thinking I might live to see sunset. Then, a quick transition into

Sister Christian - Night Ranger

(... and his mullet grew three sizes that day...)

By the way, if you were driving around Norman this morning, and saw a guy holding his lighter out the drivers' side window, air-singing "What's your price for flight? For finding Mr. Right?" that could have been me. Then,

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.

Not their best, not their worst, but the title was preparing me for being stuck at a train crossing with

Rockin' in the U.S.A. - John Cougar Mellencrap

If you saw the guy with his lips wrapped around the business end of a 12-gauge ... well, anyway, the only thing that kept me from pulling the trigger was the distracting realization that it was the same damned song as "What I Like About You". Seriously. So, you can add "Thieving SoB" to the list of "Things That Suck About John Cougar".

Finally the train ended, and I pulled into the parking lot to

Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles

All in all, an up-down morning.

Don't Know What This Means

Not a great start to the day.

Although I did get a few measures of "Head over Heels" by Tears for Fears (but not enough to count), the day's start was

If I Ever Lose My Faith In You - Sting
Superfreak - Rick James

So, does the first song mean my day will be overrated, arrogant, but ultimately immensely profitable? As for music:

You Better You Bet by The Who

Pretty much the dying gasp of a colossally overrated band. When the alarm went off, I got the very first notes of:

 We Will Rock You, Queen

I don't know if it's possible to start your day better. And I didn't jump in toward the end. I got the whole thing, from the last few syllables of some radio promo, to the first few drum-chant measures of one of rock's greatest anthems. The follow-up song was strong on it's own:

You're All I've Got Tonight, The Cars

Add to that a very solid drive-time duo of

 Glory Days, The Boss
Bad to the Bone, George Thorogood & The Destroyers

Basically, I got out of bed with the boxing gloves on. By the time I got to work, I had Mick and Apollo in my corner. Today is gonna ROCK!

Update: OMG. Brutal meeting. Somebody should've reminded me that the last time someone had Mick and Apollo in their corner, they got they ass handed to them by a bad man with a mohawk.

The First Day of the Rest of My Slow, Inevitable Decline

Early start today. 4:45 am.

Baby I Love Your Way - Peter Frampton

Oh my. The purpose of this blog is to complement the important theological archives of my friend and co-worker. I'm not exactly sure, but I think we may have co-founded a religion.

Here's the background:

We travel together for work, a lot.

Here's the basic belief system:
He and I have long noticed that the fortunes of our day are inexplicably tied to the morning music we hear on our Jack format radio station.

At 6:00 am, if we pull into 7-Eleven for coffee and donuts, and the radio is belting out some quality Clash, or maybe some Queen or even something newer-but-good, we're gonna kick some ass.

However, if we roll up to Hootie & the Blowfish, our day is gonna be crap. Mike & the Mechanics means there's a bridge abutment out there waiting for us.

Updates beginning tomorrow.
